About the Project
"Shops of Lucena" is a photographic series that explores the unique essence of Lucena City through its diverse local businesses. While most people think of a city’s tourism, geography, or history as its defining traits, this project focuses on what truly sets Lucena apart: its businesses and the people who bring them to life.
The series captures the facades of various establishments believing that through a storefront, there is already a whole narrative to tell. The exterior of a business reveals much about its character, the personality of its owners, and the everyday lives that unfold within and around it. Through a typological approach, the photographs emphasize the individuality of each business, highlighting how they distinguish themselves from one another. The two-dimensional style further enhances the details, allowing viewers to fully appreciate the distinct qualities of each storefront.
The artist believes that photographs will be able to introduce the city of Lucena through the businesses and the people that comprise it. The artist wants to show the viewers a glimpse of what made him become fond with the city and the reason he keeps on coming back to it. It's an homage to the business owners who, through their dedication and hard work, keep the city vibrant and alive. They are often overlooked, yet they play a crucial role in shaping the city’s identity.
In showcasing these businesses, the artist hopes to provide an alternative narrative of Lucena, beyond its well-known landmarks and tourist spots. These businesses are the unsung heroes that give the city its unique flavor, proving that what makes a place truly special goes beyond its postcard images.
